My father-in-law, the same man who\u00a0introduced me to smoked chicken<\/a> 15 years ago, also introduced me to smoked turkey.\u00a0 But not in quite the same positive way as chicken.\u00a0 It was actually a nightmarish story that still lives in family lore…and scared me out of trying to smoke one myself until just a couple of years ago.<\/p>\r\n

He set out to smoke a turkey for a delicious New Years Eve meal.\u00a0 The whole family was excited.\u00a0 He put the turkey on his Brinkman bullet smoker early in the morning, anticipating its completion in time for a tasty dinner.<\/p>\r\n

Dinner came and went.\u00a0 So did dessert.\u00a0 Then midnight.\u00a0 Then 3am.\u00a0 Then the sun came up.\u00a0 The turkey continued to smoke.<\/p>\r\n

And smoke.<\/p>\r\n

It was a 22 pound turkey.\u00a0 And the poor little smoker has a hard time keeping its temperature above 200, especially on a cold December\/January day.<\/p>\r\n

So.\u00a0 The family had turkey for New Years Day Lunch.<\/p>\r\n

So the lessons here are start with a smaller bird and know your smokers capabilities. You might even want to start with something as easy as smoking a three pound boneless turkey breast<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

Now, don’t be afraid.\u00a0 Try this recipe out and you will enjoy the results.\u00a0 There aren’t many things more enjoyable than smoked turkey.\u00a0 PLUS, this frees up a ton of space in your oven, which is always a problem on Thanksgiving.\u00a0 That’s huge.\u00a0 So…better flavor, juicier, more oven space…win-win-win.<\/p>\r\n
