"Maulls

There is nothing that blows you away about this sauce. There isn’t a flavor profile that makes your taste buds explode. It’s just the smoothest, most basic barbecue sauce you can find. No giant flecks of spice, no overpowering heat or sweet, no harsh flavors left behind. This makes it hard to describe, other than to say it’s simply just very tasty, very smooth, traditional barbecue sauce.

Period.

The Maull family still owns the company. The Maull family still makes the sauce. They’ve been doing it the same way for over 70 years.

It isn’t distributed nationwide, but I have good news. The St. Louis BBQ Store is now selling and shipping this sauce! (You’re going to chuckle when you see how much sauce you can get for ridiculously cheap.) Those of us who grew up in St. Louis know its flavors all too well and will tell you until we’re blue in the face about how great grilling/barbecue flavors start with Maull’s. Missouri is the Show Me State, after all, so you’re going to have to show me a better simple, base, tasty sauce than Maull’s.

While we’re on St. Louis, I thought I’d mention here that St. Louis uses 2 1/2 more barbecue sauce than the national average, and the sauce St. Louisan’s purchase more than any other is Maull’s. So yea, we’re a little biased. And on a personal note, I don’t think I’ve ever opened up the pantry at my parent’s house without seeing at least one bottle of Maull’s sauce in there. And I certainly have zero memories of my dad grilling pork steaks without a bottle of Maull’s at the ready.

So yes, this review is very personal. If you think it needs a little something added – go for it. That’s what Maull’s wants you to do. All they’ve done for 3/4 of a century is provide a simple smooth sauce that can be turned into whatever you want it to be. Show me a company that does it better. I don’t think you can.

I have more good news. The St. Louis BBQ Store has decided to generously donate a sampling of ALL Maull’s sauces to one of our readers. He’s giving a 42 oz. Genuine BBQ Sauce, so you can try a few different tweaks and changes of your own to this awesome base sauce. On top of that, he’s also giving us:

– 24 oz Onion Bit BBQ Sauce

– 24 oz Sweet and Mild BBQ Sauce

– 24 oz Sweet and Smokey BBQ Sauce

How great is that!? You’ll have enough Maull’s to get you through the 4th of July!
